Insider Tips for Chingford
Station Road, King's Road, Larkshall Road and Friday Hill are 20mph, as are most of the streets you will drive. Keep checking your speedometer, especially going downhill.
Most routes include a forest road: Ranger's Road, Bury Road or the A104 Epping New Road, which are 40mph in places. Build up to the limit where it is safe and slow down well before the 30 and 20 signs back into town.
Whitehall Road is on almost every route. It is a long residential road with parked cars and side roads, so watch for vehicles pulling out.
Many routes work the streets around Friday Hill, Simmons Lane and Endlebury Road, where a manoeuvre is often asked for. Parked cars on both sides mean plenty of giving way.
Some routes go up to Sewardstone and come back down Kings Head Hill and The Ridgeway. Plan ahead for the junctions at the bottom as you come back into Chingford.
What Chingford Test Routes Look Like
Chingford routes start on Station Road, by the station, and nearly all of them use Ranger's Road and Whitehall Road. From there they go one of three ways: south into the 20mph streets around Friday Hill, Larkshall Road and Endlebury Road; out through Epping Forest on Bury Road or the A104 Epping New Road; or north towards Sewardstone and back down Kings Head Hill. The forest roads are faster, up to 40mph, and the town streets are mostly 20mph, so speed changes come often. Examiners choose the route on the day, so learn the areas rather than one fixed route.
