Insider Tips for Goodmayes
Every route leaves by Kildowan Road, a 20mph side street, and most turn onto Granton Road or Goodmayes Road straight away. Check both ways properly at that first junction; nerves make it the easiest place to rush.
Green Lane (the A1083) appears on almost every route. It is a long 30mph road with side roads, crossings and parked cars, so hold a steady 30 and watch for vehicles pulling out.
Many routes head south into Becontree: Goodmayes Lane, Mayesbrook Road, Becontree Avenue and Wood Lane. Becontree Avenue is 20mph and has a central reservation on parts of it, so check which side of the island you need before you turn.
Routes to the north join the A12 Eastern Avenue, 50mph for most of this stretch. Joining from a side road such as Brian Road, build your speed and merge with the traffic rather than below it.
Routes to the west work the residential streets around South Park: Breamore Road, Water Lane, South Park Drive and Mortlake Road. Narrow with parked cars on both sides, so expect to give way and to be asked for a manoeuvre.
A few routes go south to the A13 at Barking through Gale Street, Porters Avenue and Lodge Avenue, with several roundabouts in a row. Read the signs early and pick your lane before you arrive.
What Goodmayes Test Routes Look Like
Goodmayes routes start on Kildowan Road and nearly all of them use Green Lane at some point. From there they go one of four ways: south into Becontree along Goodmayes Lane, Becontree Avenue and Wood Lane; west into the streets around South Park and Water Lane; north onto the A12 Eastern Avenue by way of Chadwell Heath or Aldborough Road; or, less often, south to the A13 at Barking. The drive back usually comes along Green Lane or the High Road through Seven Kings. Examiners choose the route on the day, so learn the areas rather than one fixed route.
